After breakfast, begin with Mehrangarh Fort, one of the oldest and most beautiful forts in Rajasthan that has remained impregnable over centuries. This massive fort stands on a low sandstone hill with palace apartments like Sukh Mahal, Phool Mahal, and Sheesh Mahal beautifully decorated with jewellery, costumes, armory, and palanquins. Continue to Jaswant Thada, a white marble cenotaph built by Sardar Singh for his father Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, where the marble is polished so fine it seems to glow in sunlight. Visit Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum before exploring the Falnez neighborhood. Optional afternoon excursion to Bishnoi Village for jeep safari to witness traditional desert life.
Early morning departure for Jaisalmer (5-6 hours drive). En route stop at Osian, an ancient town 65 km north of Jodhpur surrounded by sand dunes, containing the largest group of eighth to tenth century Hindu and Jain temples in Rajasthan5. Visit the 8th century Surya temple with beautifully carved pillars and Sachiya Mata temple. Continue through the increasingly arid landscape of Thar Desert. Arrive in Jaisalmer, the “Golden City” founded 800 years ago by Jaisal, an important ancient trading centre on camel trade routes5. Check into hotel and evening at leisure exploring local markets.
Morning exploration of Jaisalmer Fort, one of the world’s few living forts where people still reside, built in 1156 on the 80-meter-high Trikuta hill15. The fort glows golden under the sun with its yellow sandstone construction. Visit exquisitely carved Patwon Ki Haveli, Nathmal Ki Haveli, and Salim Singh Ki Haveli – magnificent old merchant homes from the 19th century2. Afternoon visit to Gadisar Lake surrounded by small temples and shrines, an artificial water conservation tank that supplied the entire city1. Explore the Jain Temples within the fort complex and local bazaars for embroidery, mirror work, silver jewelry, and handicrafts.
Morning visit to Bada Bagh cenotaphs and the mysterious abandoned village of Kuldhara. Continue to Sam Sand Dunes (40-50 km from city) for authentic desert experience. Begin camel safari across rolling golden sands reaching up to 150 meters high, creating a mesmerizing golden sea. Visit remote desert villages and witness spectacular sunset over the dunes.
